Shopping in English
Shopping is fun, but to shop in English can be difficult.

For example, it’s your boyfriend’s birthday and you want to surprise him with a stylish new shirt.  How do you ask the seller for what you want? You need to be sure that you get what you asked for!

Shopping Dialogue: How to use these words

The dialogue below uses the words in the table above with specific examples.
The Customer is you, the person who is shopping.
The Seller is the sales person in the store who will be helping you; the seller can also be the cashier at the register when you pay.

Customer:  Hi, can you help me?
Seller: Sure.
Customer: I am looking to buy a stylish shirt for my boyfriend for his birthday.
He is 6’2” and has broad shoulders. I think he is a size XL.
Seller:  Here are some trendy new shirts.
Customer: Thanks, but how can I find what I’m looking for?
Seller: You can browse by size and color.
Customer: Great! What is the price of this shirt?
Seller: That costs $40.
Customer: Are there any discounts?
Seller:

Yes, there is a special on today.

If you buy 2 shirts there is a 25% off on the lower priced shirt.
Customer: That is a bargain!
Customer:  What should I do if the shirt is too small? Can I exchange it?
Seller:  Yes. Just return the shirt with the receipt.
Customer:  Ok. How much am I spending?
Seller:  Your total charge is $40.  Do you have a customer loyalty card?
Customer:  No. Why?
Seller:  Members get 10% off of every purchase.
How would you like to pay: cash or credit?
Customer:  By credit card.
Seller:  Do you want to pay in installments?
Customer:  Yes, 2 payments please.
Seller:  Would you like this gift-wrapped?
Customer:  Yes, thank you.
